MYTHS AND FACTS
MYTH
If I don't have a history of breast cancer, I can't get it.
FACT
Most people diagnosed with breast cancer have no known family
history.
If your mother, sister, or daughter has or has had breast cancer, that almost
doubles your risk for the disease. Nevertheless, most women who get breast
cancer do not have a family history of the disease
MYTH
The only sign for breast cancer is a lump.
FACT
Symptoms of breast cancer include:
Lump in the breast or armpit, swelling, skin thickening, redness, nipple
discharge
MYTH
If you maintain a healthy weight, exercise regularly, eat healthy, and
limit alcohol, you don’t have to worry about breast cancer.
FACT
Although these lifestyle modifications can help reduce the risk of Breast Cancer, they can’t eradicate it.
MYTH
Breast cancer only happens to middle-aged and older women.
FACT
Younger women can and do get breast cancer, as well as men
MYTH
"If I am diagnosed with breast cancer, I have to remove my breast".
FACT
There are other treatment options for breast cancer, that do not involve
removing your entire breast. Such as a lumpectomy, where only a portion of your
breast is removed
